Every day special needs children are born. Most of the time, their issues will be on the inside with their behavior or learning. But there are many who are born with genetic issues that manifest on the outside. Some may be born deformed, missing a limb or their faces may appear different. Then there was Evan, Joe and De De Fasciano’s son, who was born with something called Harlequin Ichthyosis. Plainly speaking – his skin grows too fast.
The result is that he has scales growing all over his body. The photo of him as a newborn is jarring – his head looks like it’s covered in bandages. That’s dry skin. He has to be bathed twice a day and slathered with both medicine and moisturizers. He has a bald head and needs a special walker for him to get around. None of that diminishes his smile, which seems to be on his face all the time.
De De and Joe say that some people are mean to him, but he doesn’t let it bother him. Nor should it. That’s an excellent attitude on his part. Why should people judge him? It’s just extra skin on his body. It doesn’t diminish the fact that there’s a good kid underneath it all. He’s even posed for some pictures with a sign: “I am fine and I am happy with my life.” At the time of the video, he was five years old.
His classmates all seem to love him. De De says that he’s a “rock star” there, people keep giving him high fives. He deserves all the love and kindness for the way that he handles his situation. I hope that remains with him for the rest of his life. He’s going to be getting older and learning how to take care of himself too.
