Prince is undoubtedly one of the most influential and interesting musicians of the modern era. When he passed, tributes to his work flooded the internet. Everything from giant choruses of people singing his songs to wild and weird costumed versions of his videos, it was made very clear how much love Prince earned throughout his career.
Country artist up and comer (and multiple award winner) Chris Stapleton might not be the first person you think of when you think of a Prince tribute, but his version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” is sure to knock your socks off.
Stapleton performed his rendition of Prince’s classic tune at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California a few months ago, and it is nothing short of amazing. He performed the song as an encore performance, surely making Prince, wherever he is, quite proud.
Covering Prince was not an easy task, Stapleton admitted to Rolling Stone Country. Though he took home the CMA Male Vocalist of the Year award in 2016, the stylings of a country/blues singer are much different than that of pop icon Prince.
“He’s a tough one to cover. There’s a lot going on there. He had a lot of range,” Stapleton said. Well, we think Stapleton did a bang up job.
