Colossal Great Dane helps a small girl with a rare condition walk again

Bella is an 11 year-old girl who has Morquio syndrome. It’s a rare congenital disorder that causes a litany of medical problems: skeletal abnormalities, heart issues, joint disease, among many others. Over time, as more and more symptoms cropped up, Bella was facing the unhappy prospect of increasingly limited mobility.

But leave it to a gigantic black-and-white Great Dane named George to change the little girl’s life forever. When they met through the Service Dog Project, they bonded almost instantly. As a one of the trainers recalled, “One day, Bella climbed up with George and she just started talking to George and next thing you know, his head is in her lap and he’s just looking up at her like she’s the best thing in the whole world.”

The really incredible thing is just how much George has been able to do for Bella. Before, she had only been able to walk with crutches and then only with great difficulty. More often, she used a wheelchair. But with help from an expert mobility service dog like George, she was eventually able to walk without crutches. “The first time I walked with George, it was amazing. It was like, I haven’t walked in so long and now I get to do it again.”

But make no mistake: George is not a good dog — he’s the best dog ever! Surely he deserved a reward for all the work he’d done to get Bella back on her feet. The people at BarkPost agreed and treated him to a “dog’s best day.” George was taken to a variety of fun places, enjoying a day of well-deserved indulgence. As you’ll see in the video posted below, it was the stuff of any dog’s wildest dreams. You’ll also meet Bella, a courageous little girl with an indomitable fighting spirit.
