Imagine that you have adopted a puppy. For the first year or two, you go through the process of having to train this dog. You put up with it when it misbehaves and even when it wakes up in the middle of the night because you know that it is still learning. You know that given enough care, attention, and proper training, this dog will grow up to be calm and well behaved.
Now, imagine that you have had this dog for six years. It is now a very well behaved dog who knows better than to wake its owners up when they are sleeping. Suddenly, the dog does something it hasn’t done in years. It jumps on your bed, shaking and barking to wake you up. Your first reaction is to scold the dog and go back to sleep, but then you wonder if maybe something is wrong and your faithful dog is trying desperately to warn you about it.
This is exactly what happened to the Brousseau family when their family dog, Duke, went wild trying to wake them up in the middle of the night. They immediately knew something must be wrong because Duke was normally such a well behaved dog. Right away, they ran to their baby’s room and found something horrible.
