This is famous clip from Dolly Parton’s Christmas Special. You simply must see for yourself how fantastic Dolly looked and how awesome she sounded singing in front of a church congregation in the midst of all these beautiful flowers!
The song is Go Tell It On The Mountain, a fantastic Christmas carol that had its roots in spiritual gatherings of African Americans during the last days of slavery at the end of the Civil War. But why was Dolly Parton singing it in front of an all-white church congregation?
Think again. There is a huge surprise coming. The intensity of the song picked up by several levels when the awesome black choir stormed down the aisle and joined Dolly in praising the Lord with song and dance, swooning with joy and gratitude.
This rendition of Go Tell It On The Mountain is right up there among the best, despite the many big acts that have recorded this song, including Simon and Garfunkel, Vanessa Williams, Bobby Darin, Garth Brooks, Chery Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, and more.
There is another work of art of the same title that is as monumental as this Christmas carol, and I’d be remiss not to mention it here. It is, of course, the novel by James Baldwin, Go Tell It on the Mountain from the 50’s. There are churches in the book too, and it’s quite simply one of the most genuine and touching story ever written.
Both this performance by Dolly Parton and the book by James Baldwin are not to be missed!
