Dogs and children can get along wonderfully. That said, you do have to be careful when introducing a dog to a new child, especially if that dog is used to adult humans. Children, especially really young ones, behave very differently from adults and this can stress a dog out and cause a normally friendly and calm dog to react unpredictably.
As you’ll soon see, it’s no accident that beagles are such a popular and beloved breed of dog. Originally bred for hunting rabbits, these dogs are very smart but single-minded. Their almost supernatural sense of smell has made beagles the dog of choice for customs inspectors. Beagles are especially well-suited for that job because their small size, pleasant demeanor, and non-threatening appearance is less likely to upset people who are fearful of dogs. These gentle, friendly, and “merry” dogs are great family pets and are especially good with children.
And now we come to a beagle named Charlie. Although friendly, beagles can be a little bit standoffish when they meet a new person. But when Charlie’s human parents brought home their newborn daughter Laura and introduced her, he loved her form the get-go!
The really remarkable thing is that Charlie didn’t need to be taught how to love Laura. It all came naturally to him: he just knew. Better still, this clever fellow has made himself very useful. “We taught our dog how to play keyboard, how to change traffic lights and how to swing a baby crib, but we never had to teach him how to love our daughter. Now they are best friends. Thank you Charlie for making her smile every day.”
