Reading a cat’s mind can be a tricky business. What a cat is thinking is usually a total mystery and if you do discover what was on the kitty’s brain, it often turns out to be something bizarre or unexpected. If the feline mind is at all political, we would expect its concerns to be focused exclusively on things like relations with other animals and the finer points of managing the human parents. The last thing we’d anticipate is a cat having the slightest interest in an American presidential election, let alone harbor strong opinions about any of the candidates.
Unlikely though it might seem, at least one cat got quite worked up about the 2016 presidential election. Hamlet is a big, fluffy orange cat. A natural supporter of Donald Trump? Nope.
Recall that one of the low-lights of last year’s campaign was the release of a recording from a few years prior in which Trump made lewd comments about women. This caused quite a kerfluffle and Trump eventually appeared on TV to make an apology. Susan Scoblink-O’Neill was watching this on her computer when Hamlet jumped up and started using the candidate’s face as a scratching post! She explained that Hamlet “loves the computer and is very interactive. He usually scratches the screen when there are bird or fish videos playing,” although “he hadn’t been doing that as much of late.” Was Hamlet outraged by Trump’s use of feline-themed terminology? We can only guess.
We don’t know if Hamlet supported any of the other candidates, wrote himself in, or simply didn’t want anyone to be president. What we do know is that he’s going to need a lot of catnip to get through the next four years.
