A labor of love: this home’s Christmas light display honors our Veterans

In some neighborhoods, homeowners compete to put on the most eye-popping Christmas light display. New lighting and computer technologies have greatly accelerated this seasonal arms race. But as you’ll see in the video posted below, one family decided to put on an amazing light display while at the same time honoring the nation’s veterans for their service and sacrifice.

The holiday season can be stressful. There’s always shopping that needs to be done and the crowds at the mall only get bigger and more frenzied as Christmas Eve approaches. Food and other goodies have to be prepared. Travel and lodging arrangements need to be figured out. But once all that stuff is taken care of, most of us can kick back and relax while spending time with friends and family. It’s a very different story for families who have someone in the armed forces, to say nothing of those who’ve had a loved one lose their life in the line of duty. For these families, Christmas can be a bittersweet holiday: there’s an empty seat at the table.

It was a patriotic homeowner in Tallahassee, Florida who decided to remind everyone to remember all those who can’t spend Christmas with their families because they’re on duty defending the nation and also not to forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. He certainly had a large canvas to work with and he made the most of it, covering his large house and some nearby trees with lights. There’s even a giant American flag on the roof! What makes the whole thing more spectacular is the way the lights are carefully choreographed to turn on and off, change color, and do other tricks, all to the beat of some perfectly chosen patriotic music.

We wish all of you a merry Christmas! But amid all the celebrations, take a moment to remember everyone who can’t be home this year.
