The mother’s instinct to protect her young in any way possible is amazing. The feats that mothers perform in the service of their young defy all logic. Mighty acts of strength, cunning and cleverness that puts Sherlock to shame, and leaps of bravery are all par for the course. This isn’t just a human trait. All species share this devotion.
For 26 years, Officer James Givens. has served with the Cincinnati Police Department. In all that time he’s seen a lot of protective mothers. But he didn’t expect the mother in this case. Givens was parked in his patrol car on what seemed to be a normal Monday when he was approached by an unexpected visitor.
“This goose came up and started pecking on the side of the car,” Givens said. “I threw some food out for her, but she didn’t take it. She just kept pecking and quacking. Then she walked away, stopped and looked back. Then came over again and pecked some more.”
The goose drew Givens out of his car and led him about 100 yards. There, the officer saw a baby goose, tangled in a balloon string. He was hesitant to approach the baby, not wanting to upset the mother. His call for SPCA assistance yielded no results, but a fellow officer volunteered to help.
When Officer Charron arrived, she untangled the baby as the mother goose watched calmly. “As if she knew,” Givens said. The goose reunited with her child, and the pair swam away. As for the officers, it was an afternoon they won’t soon forget.
