Everyone needs a break once in a while, right? I’m sure you can relate to the feeling when everything seems to be going wrong. And I’m not talking about that one day that everything goes wrong and then, next day you’re back on your feet. I’m talking about those times in your life when you feel you are the laughing stock of some superior being that is playing you like a puppet.
That’s something that can really get a person down. The thing is, it can happen in any situation and time in your life. Take work for example. I know it’s not easy to find work that you really love doing. You know the saying, “Find work you love doing or love the work you do?” I’m a guy who’s done many different things for a living. I’ve learned from all my experiences, and some have proven to be real challenges for me.
Take my first job. I started working at my local supermarket. It was my first full-time job, and I was on vacation from school. There was so much to learn, and I was finally an adult. I would work long hours trying to impress my boss, eat very little, so I could go back to work… Yes, I was finally living the life. Well, my job got more and more demanding each day. I was working so many hours a day, that I didn’t have any left to do anything else. I quit that job soon after and went back to school.
At least that was an option for me back then. In my time there, I saw many cases where people would be fired for reasons that went from simple to serious. Some of these cases, involved people who were over 50 or 60. Cases where you had to wonder if that person would be even able to find a job. Some of them ended applying for unemployment benefits and living off whatever their family could provide.
I went to visit one of them. He was my friend and had been laid off. Unfortunately, many companies are looking for ‘fresh’ faces, younger people if you will. He had a ton of experience, but the experience is not always at the top of priorities for companies. It took a long time for my friend to get back on his feet. As a matter of fact, he ended up going to counseling because his self-esteem had really taken a big hit.
And this is something that happens all the time. One day you’re working, and then the next, the company you work for decides that you are no longer going in the direction the company is. You are then let go. The man in the following video had that happen to him. He was laid off and started forfeiting his rent payments. Soon after that, he was homeless. He had slept in cars, friends’ sofas, or whatever he could get. One day, he got a present from a total stranger that would change his life!
