Like most of the apes, orangutans are known for the motherly love they show towards their children. They care for them just as humans care for their young, and they stay with their mothers for much longer than most animals remain with their mothers. For four to five years, baby orangutans stay close to their mothers while learning the skills they need to survive in the wild. Maybe it is also the reason why orangutans are very lovable towards younger ones, even when they are not their own. But have you even seen how an orangutan might behave around baby animals of another species? You will in this next clip.
When this orangutan from a zoo saw zookeepers taking care of tiny tiger cubs, she wanted to do the same. I mean, they are awfully cute, so who wouldn’t? When they saw the interest this orangutan mother took in the cubs, zookeepers allowed some of the cubs to be near this orangutan to see how they might react to each other. What they saw was surprising. From that day forward, she fed and cared for the cubs, took care of them as her own and even played with them every day. The cubs were very receptive to her and loved the interaction. Isn’t that interesting that two so very different species could love each other this much?
