These 10 incredible facts about one of nature’s most terrifying creatures will amaze you

There are tons of creatures out there that we have never even heard of, who would terrify us to our core if we had. Whether they’re poisonous, vicious, or intimidatingly massive, there are just some animals you never want to encounter face to face. One animal that you probably want to avoid is the alligator snapping turtle. Here are some insane facts about this creature that will make you want to avoid getting anywhere near them.

There are three species of alligator snapping turtles in the world. These massive animals can weigh up to 200 pounds! These meat-eaters will eat just about anything they can get their jaws on, including snakes, small alligators, and raccoons! If you couldn’t already tell, these are no ordinary turtles. Their habits show it, but so does their appearance. Their raised spikes and pointed jaw make them look pretty intimidating!

Believe it or not, these creatures actually spend a majority of their time in the water. They come out every now and then to lay eggs, but with the ability to hold their breath for up to an hour, they usually stay away from the land! Not only can they hold their breath for a long time, but these turtles can live for a long time as well. Some of them have been known to live for up to 200 years, but the average lifespan is 80-100 years, with this average being shortened for turtles in captivity.

These turtles also have the ability to camouflage, hiding under algae and appearing to be rocks to anything that approaches. With no natural predators, alligator snapping turtles rest at the top of the food chain. With a quick bite, a worm-like tongue, and the most powerful jaws of any reptiles, you don’t want to get close to these animals.

There’s more that makes these turtles one of the most interesting animals on the planet. Check out this video for more information on one of the most vicious turtles out there. Then, share this video with your friends and leave us a comment!
