As Hollywood Week on American Idol comes to a close, the top 40 contestants are on their way to Hawaii to continue towards their dreams. When one of the singers is about to perform, she walks off stage and falls to the ground.
Makayla Brownlee quickly won over the judges with her talent earlier in the show. At just 17 years old, the hopeful singer suffers from a condition called vasovagal syncope. It causes her body to react to stress and anxiety, with a massive drop in blood pressure and heart rate.
As Brownlee gets onstage to sing “Rainbow” by Kacey Musgraves, she begins to look distressed and walks off the stage. Her knees suddenly buckle, and she’s on the floor before anyone can react. The medical staff was quickly called as two judges made their way backstage.
After Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan check to see if she’s okay, she’s sent away to be evaluated. Just a couple of hours later, Makayla makes her way on stage again. She’s greeted with a standing ovation, and her performance moved the audience to tears.
