“Silent Night” is one of the most feel-good producing songs of the Christmas season. There’s something about the quiet slowness of the song that makes you want to wrap your arm around the shoulder or waist of the person standing next to you and sway back and forth in time with the verses.
But when the Temptations get their hands on the classic song, they put a whole new spin on it. In the 1987 TV Christmas movie, Merry Motown Christmas, the Temptations sit down on stage to sing a soulful Motown version of the typically quiet, calming song. With Ron Tyson singing in a very impressive falsetto, the rest of the Temptations sing almost upbeat backup vocals to complement the melody like you’ve never heard before.
While this aired almost 20 years ago, it’s still so fun to watch and listen to. The group is such an iconic piece of musical history, especially crucial to the whole Motown movement. While they sang multiple songs for this TV special, this one is especially moving, and very uniquely their style.
