2002’s release of Phil Vassar’s patriotic song ‘American Child’

On August 6th, 2002, country star Phil Vassar released his hit song ‘American Child.’ Phil was known for his songwriting in the 90s for other country stars, but then he received his own recording contract in 1999.

His own debut album, released in 2000, titled ‘Phil Vassar,’ produced five hits on the U.S. Billboard country singles chart. Can you name any of his hit records?

The performance video for the song ‘American Child’ starts with Phil sitting in a grassy field with a piano. His blonde-haired daughter is there, and the two play with some old cameras that are set up on tripods across the field.

Phil sits at the piano wearing a jean jacket and singing. Then, we see Phil as a child playing with a toy plane running through the same field. Later, there are soldiers in the field, which signify his grandfather’s service.

All these images are shown as Phil sings the heartfelt lyrics, ‘Now I’m singing and living the life that I love. And when I count my blessings, I thank God I was an American child, an American child. ‘Cause dreams can grow wild born inside an American child.’

‘American Child’ is also the name of Phil’s second studio album. The second single from the album ‘This is God’ was so successful the record company re-released the ‘American Child’ album under the new title ‘This is God.’

Phil Vassar wrote for other country stars, Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina, Collin Raye, and Alan Jackson. He was even named ‘Country Songwriter of the Year’ in 1999. In total, Phil has charted 19 singles on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs. He is a fantastic country music singer and songwriter.
