Most cheetah cubs would be nervous about a photographer and their gear. But after growing up around Gordan Buchanan for nearly their whole lives, these three little ones were in the mood to play.
Several months ago, Gordon had decided to get a clearer picture of the lives of these big cats. He hoped that by filming their daily adventures, he could get a sense of the future of these animals.
On days like this, that meant getting more personally involved than he had imagined. “After a long afternoon of feeding and snoozing, at dusk, Seba and Morwa felt playful,” said Gordon.
Gordon was a good distance away from the cheetahs when he noticed Morwa heading over to his rucksack. Gordon was incredulous. “It doesn’t smell of anything but sweaty Scotsman,” he said.
“But it seems sweaty Scotsman is like catnip to Morwa,” said Gordon. The curious cheetah cub pulled Gordon’s coat off the rucksack, and when the fabric did not move away, she grabbed it and took it with her.
As adorable as the cats were, he knew they were still wild animals. He was careful as he approached, pleading with Morwa to set down his coat. Then, Seba decided to join in the fun.
It turned out Gordon had no reason to worry. The three troublemakers seemed more interested in messing with the photographer than hurting him. Watch these three little ones play a few lighthearted pranks on this beleaguered filmmaker.
