‘Britain’s Got Talent’ has a wide range of performers from different age groups. From kids to seniors, BGT is filled with surprising talent. Mel Day is another fine example. He’s a 77-year-old singer who attempts the classic Wilson Pickett song ‘Land of 1,000 Dances.’
Mel’s style is impressive. He dressed in a burgundy-colored suit with a purple shirt and vest. As soon as the song begins, he starts moving and dancing. The audience is immediately on their feet, grooving right along.
The BGT hosts Ant and Dec have fun backstage mimicking the horn hits in the tune. Mel is a natural who looks very comfortable performing on stage, and his voice is booming and filled with soul.
Judge Alesha Dixon tells Mel, ‘When you got soul like that, it never leaves you!’ Mel responds, ‘I’ve got a lot more to give, baby!’ Judge David Walliams says, ‘I want to have your baby!’ The audience roars with laughter.
Simon Cowell gets a little more serious, saying, ‘Sorry you don’t just walk on this stage at 77 and sing like that. You must have wanted to be a singer when you were younger.’ Mel tells him that he has been disappointed many times.
Simon responds, ‘Well, you know what timing is everything,’ and the judges begin voting. Each one gives a ‘yes’ vote, and it comes down to Simon, who adds some drama.
He says to Mel, ‘I think we have about 4,000 people here, so I’m going to make that 4,000 and 4 yeses!’ Everyone cheers, and Mel is smiling ear-to-ear. It is a moment that he has waited for all his life.
