You’ve probably daydreamed about what you’d say or do if you met one of your idols. In real life, you might turn to jelly and stammer something incomprehensible — or maybe just faint. Still, it’s fun to imagine. 8 year-old singing sensation Kai Langer was a guest on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” when he suddenly and unexpectedly found himself face-to-face with singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.
Kai has been a star of YouTube videos since he was just a baby and once he was old enough to sing, he started posting videos of himself singing along to his favorites, including Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, and of course, Ed Sheeran. Among Kai’s many fans is Ellen DeGeneres and he’s made several appearances on her talk show. This time, after presenting his “first girlfriend” with a Valentine’s Day card, he launched into his uniquely expressive interpretation of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.”
Partway through Kai’s performance, the audience exploded with cheering. It’s possible Kai thought this was in response to the show he was putting on. But unbeknownst to him, Ed Sheeran himself had just come out on stage and taken a perch on a chair right behind him! If his grin was anything to go by, Sheeran was having a great time! Meanwhile, Kai was so absorbed in his performance that he had no idea that his idol was right behind him until, when he was done, Ellen tapped him on the shoulder and pointed. The look on the kid’s face is absolutely priceless! Sheeran, scheduled to appear later in the show, had to get back to the dressing room, but he gave an overawed Kai a high five before leaving.
