A baby boomer’s comical take on 1950s high school dress codes

It seemed like a rule that sounded like a joke. But it was part of the dress code at schools nationwide.

Before 1969, girls in school were not allowed to wear pants. Part of their dress code was to wear dresses or skirts (so long they were at an appropriate length).

Today, girls can enjoy wearing whatever they want without any kind of limitations. However, as long as it was appropriate and applied to the dress code (i.e — nothing too revealing), you were good to go.

It’s amazing how things have changed in over five decades. Things were different back then.

But these strict dress codes based on gender are now a thing of the past. Some said in the past that it wasn’t ladylike to wear pants.

At a time when the women’s rights movement was growing rapidly, doing away with such a policy could not have come at the perfect time. Out with the old, in with the new.
