At times, we tend to think that life gets a little bit too much to bear. When this happens, it’s important to remember all the good things in life we have because not many people have that privilege. Take for instance having a roof over your head and even a warm bed to sleep in at night. Or having your family to give you support when you need it the most.
I believe I am a lucky person in that sense. I am not rich, but I have what I need. I live in a small, but comfortable home. I may not have a lot of friends, but I have a few close ones, family, and fantastic pets that make my life complete. I am fortunate enough to have food in my refrigerator each day and I can sleep in a place that is safe. I would say I have a simple life. I may not live like a high-roller, but I have much more than others.
Some people don’t have it that well. There are a lot of people who don’t have the certainty of having something to eat every day. In some cases, they need to fight over things like water or food. Unfortunately, most of these sad cases involve children. They are the ones that end up with the shorter end of the stick and are more vulnerable to abuse.
This is the story of Rommel Quemenales. He is living on the streets of Quezon City in the Philippines. Many people have seen him in the streets, but not many of them have stopped to take notice. But photographer Maria Kabs did. She met not only a boy who was living in the street but one with a great heart. She photographed him and talked to him about many things. She found out that his parents had separated. He also quit school after second grade because he didn’t have money for it. His sister lives in another town. He visits her whenever he can save money for it.
One of the things that surprised her the most, was when he showed her his best friend, Badgi. He is a puppy that came to his life when he needed it the most. The puppy was wandering the streets and looking for more than food. The puppy found a great friend in him and companionship.
