Watch the heartwarming tale sweet tail a “man on the moon” and a little girl who wants to give him a special gift.
This much-celebrated Christmas commercial was launched with much fanfare years ago, but you might have missed it because it was taken off the air shortly. Thanks to the Internet, this beautiful video is back again.
In keeping with the British retailer’s classic theme — a cute kid thinking about others at Christmas with a touching twist — the girl sees the man living on the moon through a telescope and discerns that he is lonely.
She chooses to write to him, but can’t get the note there, trying arrows and paper airplanes before she finally finds a solution. The ending is just as heart-melting as you might suspect, and this time there’s a different reason to love this Christmas video.
The retailer teamed up a charity called Age U.K. to help raise awareness of “the million older people who go a month without speaking to a friend, neighbor or member of the family.”
The John Lewis Christmas commercials are released every year by the British department store chain John Lewis and Partners in the build-up to Christmas. John Lewis launched their first Christmas advert in 2007. It has since become something of an annual tradition in popular culture, and one of the signals that the countdown to Christmas has begun. The adverts tend to attract widespread media coverage and acclaim upon their release.
The songs used in the advertising campaigns are generally covers of existing songs by popular artists. They have often reached high positions on the UK Singles Chart, and the original versions often receive a sales boost. [Wikipedia]
