Alanis Morissette has a hilarious new version of her song “Irony”

It’s been more than two decades since Alanis Morissette’s chart topping hit “Ironic” came out. It’s been called a song about “the difference between what life knows we need, and what life thinks we need.” On the “Late Late Show with James Corden,” she gave “Ironic” some new lyrics, poking fun at the annoyances life throws at people in the present day and age.

Life has always had its annoyances, although some of them have changed quite a lot in the last couple of centuries. We no longer worry about rodents living in our home’s thatched roof or getting splinters from wooden shoes. Long gone are the days when you had to be careful with a kerosene lamp or found yourself grumbling about the long line at the telegraph office. Lacking change for a pay phone or rushing to get money before the bank closed for the weekend are life annoyances you couldn’t even begin to explain to today’s youngsters.

Dressed in matching outfits, complete with knit hats and braided hair, Morissette and Corden took the stage to sing about today’s mostly high-tech “ironies.” You may have experienced some of these yourself, whether it’s the first day of your new diet being wrecked by an “office cake,” a new and improved iPhone coming out they day after you bought the last model, or being unable to vape because of a no smoking sign. If you’re a little more adventurous, you may have suffered the unfortunate irony of “swiping left” on a future soulmate.
