On this date, September 12, 1931, the country legend George Jones was born in Saratoga, Texas. He is celebrated as one of the greatest voices in country music history. Do you feel George Jones ranks among country music’s finest voices?

One of George’s biggest hits was ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today.’ The song even charted again after George passed away. At first, George didn’t like the hit song, claiming it was too morbid, but after recording it, he grew more fond of his hit.
George got his start after his father bought him a guitar at the age of nine. He earned the nickname ‘The Possum’ over his career and wrote songs for other artists like Loretta Lynn and Roger Miller.

He met his idol, Hank Williams while working at Beaumont’s KRIC radio station. George would end up recording a duet with Hank’s son, Hank Williams Jr. titled, ‘I Don’t Care If Tomorrow Never Comes.’
However, George’s all-time favorite singer was his friend Merle Haggard. When George heard Merle sing in 1961, he kicked in the office doors and demanded to know who was singing while drunk.

George was a huge success scoring over 160 singles that managed to chart from 1955 to 2013. He was famously married to fellow country star Tammy Wynette too.
The legendary country voice had a career that spanned decades with success. His uniquely distinctive voice and phrasing were products of George immersing himself in his lyrics intently. The results are some of the most beloved songs in country music history.
