The amazing Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli was born and raised in a village in Tuscany. He always showed an interest in music and was already taking piano lessons at the tender age of six. He later learned to play a half-dozen other instruments, but it’s his vocal talent that has made him an international superstar.
Bocelli’s eyesight had been poor since he was born and he has been completely blind since a soccer accident when he was twelve. Needless to say, this didn’t hold him back. Bocelli is an especially noteworthy “crossover” performer, meeting with success in both the classical repertoire and popular music.
At an event in Las Vegas, Bocelli was asked to perform a song that would be appropriate for the setting. After some humorous banter with the pianist, Bocelli had him play a few simple notes. The audience exploded when they recognized the number Bocelli was singing: “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley!
Elvis Presley, too, gave numerous performances in Las Vegas later in his career. Ever since, he’s had a special place in the city’s heart. Nowhere else are there so many Elvis impersonators!
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” featured in Elvis Presley’s 1961 film “Blue Hawaii.” The album of the same name was hugely successful and of course included this romantic song. A number of other artists have made covers of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” perhaps the most remarkable being the British reggae group UB40!
The Italian tenor’s version of Presley’s song is nothing less than spectacular. This is no mere Elvis impersonation! The audience is spellbound by Bocelli’s incredible voice and give him a standing ovation when he finishes.
