‘All in the Family’ Season 5, Episode 16 involves Archie’s mistrust of the plumber. Archie walks into the house and sees Edith standing next to the plumber. He whispers in an angry tone for Edith to come over to him. Archie tells her to call a plan and say he isn’t coming in for work because he doesn’t feel well because his tooth is aching.
Edith leaves because she says she needs to run an errand, and the plumber looks back at Archie and tells him he should get his tooth checked out. Archie looks at the plumber and says, “I don’t think I want to go to work anyways. Maybe I’ll use my time to inspect and clean my guns.”
In shock, the plumber looks at Archie and nervously tells him he must go work upstairs. He walks into the living room, and Archie tells him he shouldn’t because his daughter is in the shower.
The plumber says, “She ain’t going to get very wet. I turned the water off.” Archie changes his tune and says she’s napping, and he doesn’t want the plumber to wake her up.
The plumber asks if it’s because Archie feels uncomfortable with him upstairs with his daughter. Archie says yes, and the plumber breaks down and says this is why he does not get any work.
Archie’s friend comes over, and Archie asks him what the deal is with this plumber. His friend tells him the plumber is an ex-mafia member. Archie gets mad and tells the man he doesn’t want ex-mafias in his house.
The plumber gets sad and blames himself, and Edith comes home and tries to console the plumber. She tells him she trusts him and thinks he can do a great job. The plumber gains his confidence and says he has a job to finish, so he goes back upstairs, and the crowd cheers.
