I recently wrote about a bicyclist who scaled a 100-plus-foot tree to rescue two kittens. The video, which was taken from his perspective, was enough to cause people who are afraid of heights some terror. This video here can cause a panic attack of a different kind – one that any parent can attest to – the fear of locking their baby in a car on a hot day. That happened to a grandmother and it would have ended tragically if it weren’t for the intervention of two people who normally wouldn’t have been in the area.
It all began on a very hot, sunny day. A grandmother named Teresa Gall had her 17-month-old grandson, Liam, for the day. She had him in his car seat and, without thinking, tossed the keys to the car in the front seat, presumably to start the car when she came around to the other side. That would have been fine if the driver’s side was open. It wasn’t. She shut the passenger side… and that automatically locked all the doors. Liam was locked inside, by himself.
This suddenly set off a race against the clock, since an unairconditioned car can get very hot very quickly, which would become very deadly for young Liam. Panicking, Gall ran inside and got a hammer. Unfortunately, neither her nor her sister were strong enough to break the window. It looked very grim for Liam in there, he was vomiting and they were trying to keep him from falling asleep, which could prove fatal for the tot.
Gall prayed for help and that help came in the form of two local college football players: Shane Simpson and Jack Long. Ordinarily, they would have taken a different route after practice, but they were on this street on that day and they saw Gall hitting the car. They thought she had just locked herself out, but her frenzied actions made them reconsider. The two came to the car and within seconds, had used the hammer to break the window and extricate Liam. He’s going to probably root for this college football team for the rest of his life.
Wow. I shudder to think of what would have happened if Long and Simpson hadn’t arrived. Perhaps help would have arrived in another form. What do you think? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section. Also, please “Like” us on Facebook.
