Baby Elephant Who Lost Her Entire Family Helps Other Orphans Overcome Their Pain

Someone who has lived through pain and triumphed despite of it can often be the best person to help others recover after tragedy. Mbegu the elephant knows this principle firsthand. She was only a baby when her whole life was taken away from her.

An elephant killed a woman from a village near where Mbegu lived in Kenya. The elephant was shot and killed, but the villagers anger and grief spilled over to the younger elephant. People attacked her. Even children threw stones.

At this point, the Naibunga Conservancy intervened, acting as protection for Mbegu while the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust sent rescuers to bring her to safety.

Once settled in at the DSWT, Mbegu has blossomed. She has bonded with her keepers, who are providing an environment where she can learn to be an independent elephant in the wild. More than that, Mbegu has shown her nurturing spirit when interacting with her fellow orphans at the sanctuary.

“As one of the most loving and caring baby girls in our care, Mbegu is a mini-matriarch in the making and dotes on the younger babies,” Amie Alden, of the DSWT, said in a statement.
