‘The Golden Girls’ was famous for its witty comedy, and Betty White really brought it all together with her portrayal of Rose Nylund. This video clip features the wit of Betty White as she plays the role of Rose.
She is known on the show for her love of pets. The clip starts with Rose giving away her cat ‘Mr. Peepers’ who she rescued just a week ago. Rose was thrown out of her apartment because they don’t welcome cats. It is in this scene that Rose meets Blanche for the first time and plans to move in with her.
Next up, Rose brings home a stray dog to the girls’ shared house. When he walks in, Rose talks to him and does the dog’s voice responding. The other girls aren’t happy about the dog living with them. The biggest trouble is with Dorothy, who hates dogs. Rose tries to get her to agree to stay for the night using her dog voice. The studio audience laughs hysterically!
The following section involves Rose bringing home a chicken in a cage. The other girls spot Rose carrying the cage, and they confront her. However, Rose tells them the chicken has the talent to play the piano. The chicken plays a tiny little piano with her beak. Rose tells the girls the chicken is known as ‘Count Bessie’ like the famous musician ‘Count Basie.’
Rose wants to keep a puppy named ‘Bingo,’ but the girls reject the idea. They tell Rose that she needs a man, not a dog. The puppy eats the heel off of Blanche’s pumps, and Rose claims she ate it to protect the dog. After some fun, Rose finds a home for ‘Bingo’ and successfully rescues another animal.
The plot thickens when Rose inherits a pig from her uncle in the next scene. The girls protest until they find out the pig named ‘Baby’ comes with $100,000. The pig gets to stay, but Rose grows too attached and lets him roam around the house, causing chaos.
In the final clip, Rose is a little down because of her work, and the girls get her a dog named ‘Jake.’ Later in the episode, Rose gives the dog to a man who recently lost his wife to comfort him. The kindness of Rose stands out in these clips as played by the amazing Betty White!
