Crossbreeding is complex. Breeding one species with another one could take years of attempts and failures. The video below features one of these crossbreeds. The Belgian Blue is a cattle breed which originated in the early 20th century in central and upper Belgium. They are reared for a strange feature called muscular hypertrophy or double muscling.
This trait is actually beneficial to cattle breeders. It is highly desirable for the quantity of meat it produces, and inevitably, the price they get in return for the quantity. Breeds that have this characteristic are larger than other breeds that don’t, so sometimes they can be hard to handle. There are other pure breeds of cattle with this feature, but the Belgian Blue is the most desirable in Europe.
Belgian Blue cattle are quite popular in Europe and Australia, and they have recently been introduced to the United States as well. The USDA has deemed the Belgian Blue’s meat as rather excellent, and “on line for the new standards.” The Belgian Blue in this clip is a bull, so no one will be eating him! But watch as he shows off his muscular physique.
Of course, he doesn’t even know he’s being filmed. Look how huge he is. Would you want to meet this guy in the middle of a field? I sure wouldn’t. He doesn’t look like a creature I would want to test.
