After dating for almost a year and a half, American actress Meghan Markle and Britain’s Prince Harry made it official in November 2017: they’re engaged to be married, with the wedding scheduled for May 2018.
Meghan is perhaps best known for playing Rachel Zane in the USA Network legal drama “Suits.” But she’s also been involved in the fashion industry, having founded a magazine and launched her own line of clothing. In addition to all that, she’s done plenty of work on behalf of humanitarian causes, notably women’s rights, clean drinking water, and ending modern-day slavery.
Harry and Meghan actually managed to keep their relationship under-the-radar for a good six months before the news media, and especially the always royal-watching tabloids, figured out what was going on. Once rumors of an engagement announcement made the rounds, reporters spent several days camped out near Buckingham Palace! Finally the word came from Harry’s Father: “His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle.” Asked by a reporter when he knew he wanted to marry Meghan, Harry replied, “When did I know she was the one? The very first time we met.” The engagement ring he gave her featured a large diamond from Botswana — they vacationed in the southern African country just weeks into their relationship — and two smaller diamonds that had belonged to Harry’s mother, Princess Diana.
The bride-to-be’s parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland, wished the pair well: “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents. We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”
