People dream about moving away from the hustle and bustle of city life to a cabin in the middle of the forest, away from people, pollution, crime, and the monotony of the typical workday. It is usually something that we can only achieve after reaching retirement age.
However, if you have the time and knowledge to build your own, there are ways around that. It may take some time, especially if you use the trees from the surrounding hillsides and a portable sawmill to cut and plain all the boards you need. It is possible to do this, but it is not a simple task.
You will first need to prepare the ground under and around the area you plan to use. You cannot just leave the ground the way it is unless you plan to put the structure on stilts. Either way, you will need to have some type of level surface to work with.
The floor will come next, so it is crucial to ensure that the foundation is level. You do not want to walk around at an angle every time you get up. And unless you try to make some furniture with two legs more extended than the others, you will not want to deal with sitting or sleeping at an acute angle.
As you might imagine, the walls come next. It is essential to frame each side with it lying flat on the ground. In this way, you can ensure that everything is square and secure. Once they are all finished, you will want to lean them up and nail them in place, ensuring that the wall is at a 90-degree angle to the floor.
The roof is next. You will need to build a frame based on your chosen style. Each angle needs to be as close to perfect as possible, and after the structure is up, you will want to put some sheeting on before you use pieces of wood to make the shingles.
The final step is to build the walls and cover them with wood siding. You can always make a gap between the outer edges and the inner walls if you want to stuff them with insulation materials. Install any windows and doors as you go, and make sure that everything is in place properly.
That is all there is to build your own small cabin in the wilderness. You will have to create some furniture and beds for the inside, which you can do as you go or after the place is completed. After you have completed all the hard work, you can now sit back, relax, and enjoy the pure mountain air and all the forest’s sounds.
