Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman’s Courtroom Comedy Brings the Laughs

Oh, how we laughed until we couldn’t breathe! Do you remember when we would gather around the television to watch the comedic brilliance of Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and the guests on the Carol Burnett Show? And who could forget the hilarious skit that left us in stitches, where Carol Burnett’s court stenographer steals the show?

It begins with Mr. Farmington (John Byner), the accused, sitting before the jury. As we all eagerly watch, Attorney Manson (Harvey Korman) takes over the proceedings. With a confident demeanor, he addresses the jury, promising to prove that Mr. Farmington is guilty of the crime involving his wife. As we watch the drama unfold, we can’t help but lean in a little closer.

Mr. Farmington looks straight at the attorney as he is questioned about his whereabouts on that fateful night. He calmly tells Manson that he is at the movies. But what happens next leaves us all rolling with laughter! Suddenly, the court stenographer (Carol Burnett) bursts into loud laughter, bewildering everyone in the room.

As the skit continues, we can’t help but laugh at the stenographer’s antics. When Attorney Manson asks the accused to verify his alibi, Mr. Farmington admits he has none. But wait! With a smug expression, the stenographer is already typing away as if she knew the answer all along.

And when she and Mr. Farmington simultaneously name the ‘Bijou Theater’ as the location, we can’t help but grin at the absurdity. It’s as if the stenographer knew him all too well!

The skit continues with Attorney Manson getting increasingly frustrated. In a comic twist, he tries to get the stenographer to focus on her job, but she dismisses the entire trial as an open-and-shut case.

After the comedic back-and-forth, Attorney Manson, seemingly frustrated, asks the stenographer to move closer to the accused and bring all her stuff along with her. Now sitting close together, Mr. Farmington starts describing the events of that fateful night.

He tells the stenographer he has been having trouble with his wife, prompting him to go home early. He thought they could patch things up with a romantic walk on the beach. With impeccable comic timing, the stenographer interjects with a sarcastic “No Kidddiinnnngg.”

As Mr. Farmington continues his tale, he describes arriving home to find a car parked in the driveway. The realization hits him: it’s his business partner’s car. In a sincere moment, Farmington confesses to the stenographer, “You don’t know what I was going through.” However, as if sharing a genuine connection, he adds, “Maybe you do know how I feel. Anybody with a kind face like yours must have a heart full of understanding.” The sudden change in the stenographer’s demeanor is evident.

Mr. Farmington continues with his story. As he peeps through the window of his house, he hears a scream followed by two gunshots. As he rushes to the front door to investigate, he feels a sharp blow to the back of his head. And, just before losing consciousness, it dawns on him: “The butler did it!”

The stenographer’s disbelief is palpable as she exclaims, “FARMINGTON, YOU SAY THE BUTLER, DID IT?” And then, in a swift motion, she slaps him, sending him tumbling behind the stand. Her fury is evident as she can’t believe she fell for the accused’s contrived story.

And it doesn’t stop there! As Manson questions Mr. Farmington about his million-dollar insurance policy for his wife, we’re on the edge of our seats. But when the stenographer jumps in and accuses Manson of being useless, making us laugh out loud. She even goes so far as to pick up the gun presented as evidence!

In a hilarious twist, the stenographer asks the accused if the gun belongs to him. But he claims he doesn’t know how to fire it. Undeterred, she helps him pull the trigger, firing at Attorney Manson. With impeccable comedic timing, the stenographer declares, “Let’s wrap on that; the prosecution rests.”

This classic skit showcases the comedic genius of Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and John Byner. It’s a perfect reminder of their laughter and joy in our lives. As we reminisce, we’re left with a nostalgic yearning for the yesteryears.
