On August 1st, 1968, the very first episode of ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ aired on CBS, featuring a hilarious skit involving Carol and guest star Jim Nabors. The two clumsy skiers find love and broken bones at the ski lodge. The physical comedy between them is fantastic.
A group of friends decides to leave for the ski lodge. They run out of the cabin, and Carol is left alone on the couch with a cast on her arm. She begins to write to her mother with her good arm.
Carol writes how she wants to go home and that she hasn’t met anyone that is her type. Jim Nabors walks in wearing the same orange sweater outfit as Carol and big black glasses with a cast on his foot. Carol glances at him and then crumbles up her note.
Carol asks Jim if his wife knows about his broken leg. He says he doesn’t have a wife, so she offers to help him to the sofa. She feels sorry for him because crutches are tiring. She tells him she broke her leg in two places, Chicago and Denver.
She tells Jim that she broke her arm, tripping over her luggage. She asks how he broke his leg, and he says, “Don’t you remember? Well, when you tripped over your luggage, you fell right on me.”
Carol is in shock and yells, “That was you?” She accidentally hits him in the stomach with her cast out of excitement. She sits him down and tries to settle him in. She slaps his leg with her cast on accident, and he yelps in pain. She struggles and moves around, frantically apologizing before hitting him in the face with her cast, knocking his glasses off.
They talk about how they’ve learned to live with the injuries. She grabs a coffee saying, “That oughta hit the spot.” But Carol hits the coffee onto him, and it spills everywhere. Jim says, “It hit the spot, alright. It burned it right off!” Carol puts her head down because she laughs and breaks character along with Jim. The funny skit ends with both of them falling off the couch together as the audience laughs.
