‘The Carol Burnett Show’ gifted audiences will genuinely memorable characters. In this case, two characters always appear together since they are the funniest when they’re at odds.
Mr. Tudball and his secretary Mrs. Wiggins are known for their miscommunications, frustrating conflicts, and general dislike of one another. The problem is they worked together. Mr. Tudball is an average businessman with a vaguely foreign accent. As his secretary, by some unlucky turn of events, he has Mrs. Wiggins, whose yellow curls and tight pencil skirts are distracting.
In this episode, Mr. Tudball has installed an intercom to help him communicate with Mrs. Wiggins. Never mind that she’s literally a few feet away from his desk. He’s the boss, and he wants to be able to talk to her on the intercom.
Here’s the thing–Mrs. Wiggins doesn’t answer when she’s called. Mr. Tudball ends up having to walk over to her anyway, so installing it didn’t do much good.
Once Mrs. Wiggins finally comes to his desk to take notes, Mr. Tudball starts dictating notes and ideas to her. He tells Mrs. Wiggins that he doesn’t want to see anybody in his office before noon, implying that he doesn’t want any meetings scheduled.
Mrs. Wiggins, being an airhead, walks out and back to her desk. As Mrs. Wiggins fiddles with her fingernails, Mr. Tudball has to explain that he wasn’t referring to people he pays to be in the office–like her.
Mr. Tudball then tries to explain to Mrs. Wiggins that he wants Mrs. Wiggins to use the intercom to alert him to a phone call to buy him some time during a meeting later. You just know it’s all going to go wrong…and it does. Enjoy watching two great comedians having a lot of fun.
