Carol Burnett Show Shenanigans: the Cpr Dummy Debacle

A woman in a yellow blouse reads a book while another woman in a white top looks on, with a man in a suit in the foreground.

One thing about comedy, it's an art that knows no bounds, and it takes its most brilliant form when it thrives on the absurd. And speaking of absurdity, have you ever heard about someone accused of cheating with a CPR dummy?

A woman in a yellow top holds a man in a suit by his neck, appearing to struggle.

It sounds ludicrous, right? However, if you're a fan of The Carol Burnett Show, then you know that nothing is too far-fetched! Carol Burnett and her comedic partner-in-crime, Vicki Lawrence, drag in a suit-clad dummy from the Red Cross, where they learn CPR.

They hustle the dummy inside their home like a pair of stealthy, albeit slightly hysterical, spies. Why, you ask? Carol does not want the neighbors to think she's carrying her drunk husband, Roger, home after a party.

On the other hand, Carol wants to keep the dummy a secret from her husband, Roger, played by the ever-hilarious Harvey Korman, as he always makes fun of her for not completing a project.

The sisters dub the dummy "Charlie" and concoct a role-play scenario for their CPR practice. Carol suggests that most accidents happen at home, and Charlie needs a home-based crisis. With a deadpan expression, Vicki suggests that Charlie could "eat some of Carol's cooking," leaving the audience in stitches.

A woman in a yellow outfit leans over a man in a suit, appearing concerned or curious.

The comedy escalates when they decide on a simple electrocution scenario for Charlie. Vicki, the perfect co-conspirator, animates Charlie as if he's just returned from a tough day at the office, reaches for the TV remote, and Bzzzzz... it's time for CPR! They dive into their manual, desperately trying to remember the procedure amidst the chaos.

As Carol performs artificial respiration on Charlie, Vicki asks her, "Is he responding." To which Carol remarks, "he's responding... actually, he's a little better than Roger," a dig at her on-screen husband that adds another layer of hilarity.

After the "rescue," they decide to celebrate with two glasses of brandy, one for Carol and one for our patient, Charlie! However, Carol spills brandy on her blouse. Their celebratory moment is cut short when they hear Roger's car pull into the driveway. Panic ensues. Charlie is hastily stuffed into the closet, and then Roger walks in.

With two brandy glasses on the table, his wife in disarray, and a strange tie on the floor - Roger jumps to conclusions. The accusation of infidelity hangs in the air, making it even funnier when Roger finds Charlie stashed in the closet and picks a fight with the dummy!

A woman with short blonde hair in a white dress smiles at a man in a white suit.

Once the truth is revealed, we glimpse comedic genius in the form of Carol's slip-up, referring to the "hummy dome" and Harvey's brilliant improvisation of, "Your hummy almost beat me."

The chaos of the situation continues to escalate until the episode ends with Roger requiring CPR, bringing the whole absurd scenario full circle. One thing's for sure, Carol Burnett can turn even a CPR dummy into a hilarious love triangle rival! When comedy and absurdity blend, the result is a timeless skit that keeps us laughing and wanting more.
