The Carol Burnett Show was must-see TV back in the day. On Saturday, November 13, 1977 at 10pm, families across America tuned in for another hilarious episode. Gas was 65 cents a gallon, Jimmy Carter was president, and Star Wars fever was sweeping the nation.
This particular night featured a side-splitting sketch with comedy legends Dick Van Dyke and Tim Conway. They played two hapless window repairmen tasked with replacing a storefront window. From the moment they started “measuring” the nonexistent glass, it was clear this job would go hilariously wrong.
Conway’s battle with the tape measure had us in stitches
Tim Conway’s character kept getting tangled up and smacked by the spring-loaded tape measure. His exaggerated reactions and pratfalls were comedy gold. Meanwhile, Dick Van Dyke showed off his famous rubbery legs and physical comedy chops as they mimed carrying the invisible pane of glass.
The duo’s silent antics spoke volumes. Every grimace, stumble and near-miss with the imaginary glass had the audience roaring. Their impeccable timing and chemistry made the whole routine feel spontaneous, even though it was carefully choreographed.
I remember watching this with my family, all of us doubled over laughing on the couch. Conway and Van Dyke were masters at wringing humor from everyday situations. This window repair gone wrong was something we could all relate to, taken to absurd extremes.
You’ve got to see their grand finale
I won’t spoil the ending, but let’s just say these two “experts” left quite an impression on that storefront. The Carol Burnett Show was a weekly dose of laughter we could always count on.
