Obsolete Car Features We Old Gearheads Still Miss.

A woman kneels by a vintage car, holding a tool near the rear bumper, with water visible on the ground.

Remember the thrill of getting your first car back in the day?  For me, it was a '65 Mustang with a few dings and a touchy clutch, but man, I loved that car.  Part of the fun was discovering all the cool features that have sadly gone the way of the dodo in modern vehicles.

Take the vent windows, those little triangular panes you could crank open to get a blast of fresh air.  They were a lifesaver in the summer before AC became standard. And how about those bench seats? Perfect for snuggling up with your best girl at the drive-in.

Cars had so much more personality then.  Hood ornaments, whitewall tires, landau roofs - they don't make 'em like that anymore.  I always got a kick out of the spring-loaded gas caps hidden behind the license plate on some models.

Even the sound systems were an adventure.  Wrestling with tangled cassette tapes, scouring the carpet for that 8-track that popped out, fiddling with the radio dial to tune in a clear station. Kids today will never know the struggle!  And forget power windows and locks - we had to crank our windows by hand and push the lock button down manually.  Built character, I say.

Some features were a bit cumbersome, like swapping out a flat for the full-size spare in the trunk or shifting gears with "three on the tree" column-mounted shifters.  But they added to the driving experience. You felt more connected to the car, more in tune with how it operated.

Pour yourself a coffee, sit back, and take a nostalgic ride through this delightful roundup of obsolete car features we old gearheads still miss.
