CBS launched Hee Haw – Roadhouse Diner in the 60s in response to Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. The show had several acts by Country Music pop stars and surprise guests who performed many comedy sketches. The show’s background was based on the fictional rural “Kornfield Kounty” and had guests performing country music.
The hosts of the show were usually Buck Owens and Roy Clark. On the other hand, the casts usually wore farmer outfits. Recently, a clip from the comedy show “PFFT! You Was Gone!” gained immense popularity. It was due to the hilarity of the song verses sung by the actors & celebrities, such as Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, and Loretta Lynn.
Each episode featured more than one guest, and the scene began with Archie Campbell and one of his other guests joining in to sing the duet. Then, the guest would join the host onstage, facing toward the background holding a pitchfork.
However, Campbell held a scythe while performing with the guests. Both the guest and the host would sing the verse one by one. When he finishes his part, Campbell nudges the guest, holding a pitchfork, to sing their part of the song.
The song sung by Campbell & the other cast on the show had rhyming lyrics, such as “I said to my love your teeth they need fillings. She hauled off and said you ain’t got good sense, you ain’t got buck teeth, but when you are smiling, your teeth look more like an old ticket dance. Where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched all over and thought I had found true love. You met another and PFFT! You were gone!”
Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, & Archie Campbell sang a hilarious song in unison, “I felt like a fool, with fear I was shaking, for I realized the spot I was in. The trouble I had was all my making when you were caught kissing Loretta Lynn. Where are you tonight? Why did you leave me here all alone? I searched all over and thought I had found true love. But, instead, you met another and PFFT! You were gone!”
Johnny Cash was also one of the regular guests who joined the country-themed variety show, where he sang songs and traded jokes with other members. In the video clip, Johnny Cash joins Campbell for another hilarious song. One of the show’s fans wrote online, “I love the part with Conway, Loretta, and Johnny Cash.” It’s funny how the guests try to keep a straight face and sometimes give up trying and burst out laughing as they can’t complete the lyrics.
