17-year-old country singer rescues Blake Shelton from an embarrassing moment on ‘The Voice’

The Voice is known for pitting judges against each other in vying for contestants’ attention, and this video really builds on that tone.

17-year-old Carson Peters performed the country hit ‘Tulsa Time’ by Don Williams to score a rare 4-chair turnaround. His performance was energetic and lively and had the audience clapping along to the beat.

Heavily inspired by country and bluegrass artists such as Ricky Skaggs, the obvious choice would have been Blake Shelton. Still, there was some pretty heated debate among the judges.

Blake Shelton and Carson Peters

Although Peters’ country roots should have had Shelton’s attention immediately, John Legend hit the buzzer first. “My name is John Legend. I turned for you before any of the other coaches did,” Legend told Peters. “When you started to hit those big notes with such confidence, it looked like you were just having fun up there.”

And although Shelton was the next judge to turn around for Peters, Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson gave him heat for some reason. They both insisted he waited too long to turn around.

“Carson, I’m very impressed,” Shelton started before Clarkson interrupted, saying, “You weren’t very impressed. You were the last one to turn.”

After a short back and forth, Peters came to Shelton’s rescue and said that it was actually Clarkson that was the last to turn. We wonder which judge Peters might have picked to coach him.
