Curious Capybaras Can't Wait to Politely Tear Apart a Massive Pumpkin

A group of capybaras gather around a large orange ball on a sunny day.

A herd of capybaras descends upon a giant-looking pumpkin presented to them by their caretakers. Merely looking at them, it appears they are hungry and won't mind taking the pumpkin down skin by skin to reveal its flesh.

This beautiful moment is at the Nagasaki Bio Park in Japan. As soon as the Park's caretakers lay down the massive pumpkin, the giant rodents in the world attack the gourd and start tearing it apart with their incisors.

Although it takes a while before the herd breaks through the pumpkin's skin, watching how civil and organized they go about the matter is incredibly pleasing. The set of capybaras that get to the pumpkin late has to wait in line for others to finish their jobs.

Like other rodents, capybaras have sets of teeth that continuously grow. To wear their teeth down, they graze on plants and grasses. This herd of capybaras is doing just that.

The caretakers state the pumpkin should weigh about 50 to 60kg or thereabouts. Since it's unweighted before being presented to the capybaras, they have to come up with an estimate.

One of the most exciting things about the video is a capybara diving into the background pool and still manages to get the front seat to the pumpkin and enjoy the first few bites.

But the truth is the herd may have just jumped in from the pool, being semi-aquatic animals, before descending on the massive pumpkin. Regardless, it's still a fantastic thing to watch a giant rodent take on an enormous pumpkin.
