With Guitar in Sight, Curious Octopus Caught on Camera Pulling at the Heartstrings

An octopus sits on a yellow guitar in an aquarium, with a fish swimming nearby.

They say that art tends to imitate nature. However, the reverse also just happens to be true. This was put to the test most recently at Octolab when an Octopus was put on the spot.

Picture this, an octopus just having a casual day. Hanging around and stuff. Then, an acoustic guitar is introduced to the picture. You can’t help but wonder, do the guitar strings appeal to it? Is there a reaction? Or is just bleh?

In one of the most magical moments captured on camera, the octopus nudged closely to the foreign object. Appearing to take its time, the octopus made a point of inspecting the layout of the acoustic guitar.

Starting with the tuning pegs, the interested cephalopod moved about before moving to the guitar’s curved body. Interestingly, it didn’t take long before it moved into the soundhole.

While we expected instant octopus musical magic, we were a bit disappointed. The octopus could only make it so far as the strings got in the way and it got stuck.

It’s nothing new really. Stage fright isn’t that uncommon and our eight-armed friend froze on his big occasion. Then again, you can’t help but wonder if it even knew what was really happening.

Having revealed this, one thing that’s apparent is that the octopus remained curious all through the experiment. While we didn’t expect a Mozart moment in an instant, a tune or two would have been nice to hear.
