‘The Dean Martin Comedy Hour’ had some of the funniest skits on television. In this segment, Dean Martin plays a wounded man seeking the help of the frontier doctor played by Foster Brooks.
Martin stumbles into a saloon with an arrow sticking through his chest and calls for help from the doctor. Brooks staggers out from behind the bar, clearly drunk as a skunk.
Martin cannot hold a straight face at Brooks’ antics, especially when Brooks asks what’s wrong. Sarcastically, Martin replies that he’s pregnant. Brooks cracks a small smile at this witty comeback.
The pair of comedians go back and forth, with Martin trying to get help for his wound and Brooks being no help at all. After a failed examination, Brooks declares that Martin should see a priest.
Brooks tells Martin he probably has about two and a half minutes to live if he’s lucky. Brooks then looks Martin square in the eye and asks him if he knows he’s got an arrow sticking out of his back.
As if the audience wasn’t already roaring with laughter, Martin looks at the camera and declares he’s lucky the man who shot him wasn’t shorter. Even Martin laughs at his own joke.
Dean Martin and Foster Brooks know how to make a crowd laugh. They certainly delivered in this western skit featuring a less than competent doctor and a cowboy seeking his medical help.
