Coming across life that you’d never expect to see is a once in a lifetime experience. When divers Ronald Raasch and his team were in Norway’s waters after visiting a WWII shipwreck, they saw something they’d never imagined they would.
On their way back from their shipwreck mission, divers from the REV Ocean research vessel came across a transparent giant squid egg sac containing hundreds of thousands of baby squids and captured the moment on film.
The sac was found about 17 meters below the surface of the water and about 15 meters below the ocean floor. At first, divers wondered what this see-through sac was, but they soon identified it as the egg sac to a 10-armed squid.
These divers got a unique experience that many people will never be able to see for themselves. Thankfully, their equipment allowed them to document the encounter for everyone to study. Keep your eyes peeled, because you never know what you’re going to find when you go exploring.
