Detective Columbo shows fax machine who’s boss

Columbo

‘Columbo’ had so many classic ways of cracking the case, and he couldn’t be outsmarted by any criminal. In Season 2, Episode 2, ‘Agenda for Murder’ Columbo cracks the case using a fax machine.

Columbo

He stands outside and asks the woman what that particular machine in her office is because none of the men can figure it out. Columbo tells her it would help if she could just show him how it works, and she can go home.

He walks into the office and says, “All these newfangled gadgets they come out with, they make me nervous. Now my wife, last year, she got her own computer. She loves it. Me, I never go near it.”

Columbo

He asked the lady if he could send a message on the fax machine. Columbo questions everything about the device and is enamored by the idea of sending a message within seconds.

There is a message in the fax machine that was not sent by the woman. He uses his cigar to lift the paper and see the words, and he asks if she knows who it’s from, and she says, “It’s Mr. Staplin’s.”

Columbo

Columbo asks if he understood how to use the fax and when the message was sent. She tries to take the paper out to check, and he stops her. He grabs it himself with a tissue, being extra careful, and she looks at him in annoyance.

They find the letter was sent at 12:27 am across the world to Hawaii, where Mr. Staplin’s wife was staying. They step into Staplin’s office, and she explains all of the perks of his phone, including the redial feature. When Columbo hits redial, he’s solved the case again!
