In April of last year, A woman in Athens, Greece noticed a stray dog with a strange appearance. The dog’s face appeared as if had been turned to stone. She posted a photo of the dog on Facebook in an attempt to find some help for the poor creature.
Rescuers had a hard time securing her. She was sick, scared, and confused about the people approaching her. When they finally caught her, she was transported to Save A Greek stray shelter in Oropos.
There, Petra (Greek for ‘stone’) found the help she needed in the form of Valia Orfanidou, who has helped rehabilitate many dogs.
“I think she’s always been a stray because she looked like she had never been around people,” Orfanidou said. “Even dogs in that condition, if they’ve been around people are more friendly. Petra looked like she had never been touched.”
Petra was malnourished, and had to be treated for a variety of skin conditions, including mange, which had given her face the stonelike effect. Even when she was physically healthy, she still had trouble interacting with people. But Orfanidou would not give up. Though it took several more months, Petra now lives a happy, love-filled life.
