In Season 8, Episode 6 of ‘All in the Family,’ the matriarch of the family, Edith, ends an argument as only she can! Archie is begging her to call certain people to say they will not attend their anniversary because they have to leave for a vacation.
Edith says she can’t do that to them because they are really nice people. Archie tells her it’ll take them 5 hours to get there if they are lucky. Edith says they could take the train cause it’ll be faster.
Archie says, “There ain’t no train into Lake Winnipesaukee. The Indians can’t even find it with a canoe.” Edith suggests flying, but Archie says she used every barf bag the plane had the last time they flew.
Archie says he won’t argue anymore about it, and Edith begs him. Archie says, ‘Court is adjourned, court is adjourned, court is adjourned.’ Edith walks away but stops and says, “You always get your own way.”
Edith says they named their first kid Gloria instead of Jeanette, which is what Edith wanted to call her. She said it would’ve been after her favorite movie star Jeanette McDonald.
Archie says she’s wrong because she wanted to name her after “Jeanette with the virus, your friend with the fat ankles and the pop eyes.” Edith fights and says no, but Archie begs, ‘Let us not continue with this fruitless, loopless argument.”
Archie says it’s definitely over now. Edith runs after him and yells, “I ain’t leaving here tomorrow until after that wedding, and neither are you! Them people is depending on us, and I’m depending on you, and if you walk out on me tomorrow, you can keep on walkin’!” Archie stares in shock, and Edith walks out and says, ‘Now the argument is over.”
