'Elite' Goats in Southern California Are Preventing Forest Fires

A group of goats with numbered tags stand together in a fenced area, surrounded by trees and foliage.

The next time you need your backyard brush cleared, call the team you can trust. In this case, the team is elite, and it’s full of goats.

It takes a special goat to be a brush goat. Most members of the species will stand around and wait for you to feed them, so that’s why a goat herders like Ian Newsam look for goats with an independent temperament.

Newsam runs a brush clearing service company called “Brush Goats 4 Hire,” where he hires out his team of trained “elite” goats who have the right temperament and training to clear brush for his customers.
