Throughout history, jobs have evolved, leaving some of the most essential jobs obsolete. While we remember these occupations fondly, there is no need for anyone to do them anymore for various reasons.
A part of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, also known as the ‘Teletype Corporation,’ has become obsolete. The manufacturing division was responsible for creating data and recording communications equipment.
You may remember another job that isn’t seen anymore. The elevator operator or liftman was hired to manually operate an elevator. The operator had to regulate the elevator’s speed, controlled by a large lever. They also needed a good sense of timing to stop at the appropriate floor.
You don’t see any ‘Icemen’ anymore selling ice from a wagon or cart. Icemen would make daily rounds delivering ice before the electric domestic refrigerator became common in houses and businesses.
A lamplighter was hired to maintain candle and later gas street lights. Since electric lamps have replaced candles and gas, you no longer see lamplighters. They used a long pole with a wick to light the streets, and in the morning, they would return to put them out.
A telegraphist or telegrapher used to operate a telegraph key to send and receive Morse code to communicate by landlines and radio. Before wireless technology, people couldn’t communicate without this vital job.
Finally, you won’t see any milk delivery services nowadays. The milkman used to deliver bottles or cartons right to your house. This service was done daily before the invention of the household refrigerator. All these jobs have become outdated and obsolete thanks to technological advancements.
