‘Police Squad’ was an American TV crime series broadcast on ABC in 1982. With just six episodes, the show created an incredible comedic impact thanks to the amazing Leslie Nielsen as ‘Sergeant Frank Drebin.’
Even though the show was canceled after six episodes, it spawned a successful movie trilogy titled ‘The Naked Gun.’ The series’ signature humor included sight gags, wordplay, and parodies.
Some classic moments from the show include Frank offering a woman a cigarette by showing it to her and saying, ‘Cigarette?’ She responds, ‘Yes, I know.’ In another scene, Frank tells a woman, ‘We’re sorry to bother you at a time like this. We would’ve come earlier, but your husband wasn’t dead yet!’
The classic scene in the dentist’s office is hysterical. Frank tries to get into the dentist’s files when he leaves the room. But he still has the apparatus in his mouth and drools all over the files.
Frank hilariously uses the dentist’s hose to scoop up his own saliva. When the dentist returns, he interrogates him with the foam in his mouth, unable to speak clearly, except the dentist understands him perfectly.
In another funny clip, Frank says, ‘See the girl over there? When she leaves, put a tail on her.’ The other cop takes a fake animal tail out of his drawer. While pouring coffee, his captain says, ‘Say when Frank.’ Of course, Frank simply says ‘When.’
These types of hysterical moments and wordplay were what made ‘Police Squad’ so memorable. Leslie Nielsen’s perfect comic timing and delivery made every episode funny and inspired the movie trilogy that followed in the 80s and beyond.
