Being a father is the single best blessing any man can have. My case was not the exception. The only thing is, like many parents, I had no idea how to solve the most common problems that arose. For starters, I had 2 daughters that I had no idea how to raise. When things between me and their mother didn’t work out, we talked about the possibility of me raising them.
Everything looked easy on paper, but I have to say it really wasn’t. First, what made it especially difficult for me, was the fact that I grew up without any sisters. So, I had no clue on how to approach things or how they thought at specific ages in their life. I was faced just as many new fathers are, and this was having to solve many difficulties at the same time.
One of the things that most parents fear is their babies getting sick. I remember that I would run to the pediatrician at the first sign of possible flu. I learned a lot during all those visits to the doctor. One crazy thing that happens when you are raising children is that you become an expert at diagnosing potential problems your baby will have, even before the symptoms actually appear.
I remember the doctor would sometimes be amazed at how accurate my assumptions were. I used to tell him that I wasn’t an expert at medicine or diagnosis, I was just an expert in knowing my baby, how she would react to which things, and so on.
Besides medical issues, I was faced with the single most intriguing question that all fathers ask themselves: Why is my baby crying? I remember being clueless the first time I saw either one of my daughters crying. My first assumption was that they would be hungry. I found out that it would be true only a few of the times. Mostly it would be an issue relating to gas, needing a diaper change, needing a shower, wanting a car ride, etc.
There were a few times that I had gone over the whole checklist and I still would not find the reason for which they would be crying. Sometimes I thought that they may just be missing their mother. After all, the mother spends the most time with her babies, so it’s only logical that the baby might miss her. But, what do you do when this happens?
